Bachkovo Monastery is nestled at the foot of Rodope Mountain at some 175 km from Sofia. Founded in 1083 by the Georgian borders Grigorii and Abasii Bakuriani, today the cloister is a cultural monument with national significance and second largest after the Rila Monastery.
Amidst the colorful architecture and amazing nature surroundings you can marvel the masterly painted murals and icons dating from 11th – 19th centuries – masterpieces of the Bulgarian painting schools and works of one of the best masters – Zahari Zograf. Pilgrim flocks here to see the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary Eleusa, a copy of which was given as a present to Pope John Paul II during his visit to Bulgaria
